Competition · Santa María Sports City
The new sports hall at the Santa María Sports City is conceived as a multifunctional facility for sport, physical education and local and regional competitions, complemented by ancillary spaces for athletes and stands for under 500 spectators, and able to host cultural events and concerts for up to 2,300 people.
Integrated into the existing complex, the project optimises resources, reduces costs and broadens its possible uses, while becoming a new centre of urban life in Alcañiz: a meeting place that brings together sport, culture and civic life under an iconic roof.
The proposal combines tradition and contemporaneity through open, sustainable and representative architecture, based on a glued-laminated timber structure, efficient energy systems and photovoltaic self-consumption, together with great spatial flexibility that allows the central court to adapt to many uses. Its identity is reinforced through urban integration and the reinterpretation of local elements, such as the reuse of existing walls, the creation of a public atrium and a singular roof whose overhang features a ceramic mosaic inspired by the Mudéjar tradition and the church of Santa María la Mayor.
The building sits in the landscape respecting the scale and geometry of its surroundings, with a light, fragmented roof that evokes traditional forms and helps it blend in, becoming not only a sports facility but an urban and social landmark that projects the identity and vitality of the town.
